There are 30 teams in the majors and for the most part there are 30 closers, in theory making the latter very valuable indeed -- more valuable than starting pitchers, for example, where you'll have five guys per team to choose from. On the other hand saves are but one category, and while most closers not named Joe Borowski will help out in ERA, WHIP, and strikeouts, that's not why you're spending a fourth-round pick on Jonathan Papelbon.
