The Trojans may enter 2008 with a few question marks, but Pete Carroll’s team will be in the national title hunt. Quarterback Mark Sanchez has a lot of promise and played well when called upon last year. Additionally, the backfield is deep with possible starters, including Joe McKnight, Stafon Johnson and C.J. Gable. The receivers have been inconsistent, but there are plenty of talented options. While the Trojans will be the class of the Pac-10, Arizona State and Oregon are worth a mention in the 2008 top 25. The Ducks have a few holes to fill, but the defense and running game could carry the team until the quarterback situation is settled. W... (more)
From the Raleigh News & Observer for July 22, 2008 comes an interesting tidbit nestled near the very bottom of an article on the quarterback situation at N.C. State regarding the state of affairs at the quarterback position at Virginia Tech. According to Sean Glennon, who split time with sophomore Tyrod Taylor in 2007, head coach Frank Beemer is wanting to settle on a single quarterback to head up the Hokies' offense come fall, but is willing to utilize two if for some reason the need arises.
Insight: Could it be that Beemer is feeling confident in one of the two players -- Glennon or Taylor -- to let just one man the offense in 2008? Part of the reason the Hokies seemed so strong need the end of the 2007 season was because both quarterbacks brought a unique wrinkle to the VT offense, keeping opposing defenses scrambling to counter a pocket-passer in Glennon at certain points, and a dual-threat in Taylor at others. It seems interesting that Beemer would want to turn away from the success he had last year in order to settle on just one candidate under center. The gains which might come from the continuity of a single-quarterback system are understandable, but at what cost to the predictability of the Hokies' offensive unit? Watch this one closely to see if what Glennon is claiming is true. If so, and Taylor happens to get the go ahead as starter, there may enough tangibles to justify the risk of taking the sophomore as a sleeper fantasy pick in preseason drafting. If Glennon, the pass numbers may not be enough to make him a solid enough selection for most fantasy owners. (Jason Roberts/PFS)
